A new beginning…
So last month I was asked by the Estate if I would relocate to another space on the Mamhilad site, to make way for new offices where I have been working for a year. Although it was a surprise to find out that I needed to relocate, I took it as an opportunity to set up a new space where I can continue to carry out my craft within the Mamhilad site.
I have been busy over the past few weeks setting up in my new and hopefully long term work space. The new space is made up of various rooms in which there will be different activities. As you enter the space, the first room you come to is the reception area, and I have been making the various modifications and installations to the room to make it interesting, welcoming and inviting.
A new feature of this space is my series of miniature chairs that I have started to display on the wall opposite my sample board. This is a great way to display new concept designs and create chairs in different finishes so as to accurately convey a range of different designs, without compromising on retail space.
There are several other rooms that each have their own specific use - a room that will become a teaching space for mentoring projects that I hope to set up this year, a workshop kitted out with dust extraction and machines, my own bench area where I have my lathe, drills and workbench and tools to hand, a small office, my own kitchen, wood store room and toilet all within the same unit.
Although different from the space where I’ve been working previously, I feel this space will allow me to do everything I need by way of chair making, mentoring and displaying the work that I create. Stay tuned for more updates from the studio…
