Makin’ shavings

Makin’ shavings

Using my trusty vintage Stanley No. 5 jack plane to hand shape the tapered octagonal legs for another side chair. The top of the chair has been constructed (you can see it in back of this photo) and awaiting the completion of the legs. Each leg is made into octagons, then the tenon formed and sized on the lathe to fit the mortice hole in the seat. The tops of the legs are saw kerfed to accept a wedge, ensuring correct orientation to the grain of the seat, which firmly secures it in place. This chair will be painted in a zinc milk paint and should look a bluish grey when oiled to complement the other chairs that I have built in the gallery space.
