Painting the side chair
So here I have chosen the colour and am ready to paint. I have gone for zinc milk paint this time and I start with the legs and the chair upside down to paint the lower half first, before turning it right way up and finishing off the rest. The first coat that goes on always looks unsatisfactory, but with subsequent coats and a some trust, it will look good in the end! This is partly due to the process - I like to mix the paint with enough water so I can strain it through cheese cloth; and after mixing it well I make sure there is no residue in the paint which will show up on the finished surface. Milk paint is funny like that, it’s like no other paint out there, and known to be unpredictable at the best of times, but putting up with it’s quirks is worth it for the end results are stunning. The grain comes through and with the oil finish, it enriches the colour and gives it a lovely sheen to the surface - a very pleasing result.
