A pair of captain’s chairs

Here is the latest project going through the workshop - a pair of captain’s chairs made to measure for a customer. In these images you can see the oak backrests, roughly shaped on the bandsaw and the jointed arm bows again in oak. For the joinery on the arm bow I have used a finger jointing cutter on the router table; this provides a neat, strong edge joint. The seat in the second image, has been turned upside down and the leg angles marked on the bottom of the seat. I then clamp in place my sliding bevel with the correct splay angle set and follow the resultant angle marked on the seat to give my compound angle to drill. This is repeated on all four leg mortices. I can then prepare the leg stock and fit the legs dry, giving me a height to fit the top half of the chairs. Tomorrow I will proceed with drilling the first seat mortices and then get the second seat up to the same point before thinking about the legs. Onward and upward!
