Legging up
After drilling the leg mortices with the compound angles, it was time to prepare the legs. I create the legs by taking square stock and forming tapered octagons on the table saw, before mounting each leg on the lathe and turning the tenons. Then it’s the moment of truth; how did the drilling go? I now have a ‘platform’ from which to build the top half of the chair, using my specially prepared riser jig. This sets the arm at a specific height relative to the seat. I drill through the arm bow aiming for the location in the seat. Then onto the spindles. These are also octagonal and created on the table saw, before being hand planed into subtle tapers to match the legs.
