Crafting a three stick comb-back
Here I am assembling and painting a three stick Welsh comb-back stick chair. After the legs are located into the seat, I place the arm bow on a specially made riser board and clamp it in place. This allows me to obtain the correct position of the arm in relation to the seat. Once the correct location has been found, I drill through the arm, aiming for the corresponding stick socket in the seat. I move systematically around the arm with a long drill bit extension. Once the arm has been drilled, I pass the drill bit through the mortice hole in the arm bow and locate the seat socket, drilling 3/4 of the way into the seat. This method enables the stick angles to accurately line up once the riser board is removed. I then shape and sand each stick and write a corresponding number and orientation mark before dry assembling the chair. Next I sand everything up and glue the legs into the seat, then I glue and wedge the sticks in place before finally fixing the back rest all ready for painting.
