First chair glued up
Today I prepared all the components ready to assemble the first of a pair of captain’s chairs. The legs were sanded and kerfed, ready to accept the wedges that secure the mortice and tenon joint through the seat. Once the legs were glued up, I focused on plaining the spindles to tapered octagons with a sharp jack plane. I did one final dry fit of all the components before going ahead with the glue-up. One of the requirements for these chairs, at the customers request, was to have good back support while sitting. I made sure of this by aligning the bottom of the back rest vertically with the back of the seat prior to drilling through the arm bow, so the sitters mid back is in full contact with the rest when fully seated. Next jobs are to clean up the chair and trim the legs to length and then repeat to get both chairs up to speed. More to follow…
